Khakhaza Mhlauli

I recently married Namhla on 16 December 2017, and I have 2 daughters. Nwabisa (17yrs) just started varsity, and Iyana, the youngest is 6 months.

I have been working for Protea Chemicals, a division of the JSE listed Omnia Group for the last 21years in various positions.  Last position held was Business Unit Manager – Water for South Africa (heading up the local Water Industry for the Group), and now currently heading up Business Development for the Water Industry for markets in Africa, but outside of South Africa.

I am also a founder, director, shareholder, and incoming Chairman of the Ikusasa Group of companies.  Ikusasa Chemicals was founded in 2003, and in 2008 we also formed Ikusasa Water in collaboration with a group of researchers associated with Stellenbosch University and the Water Research Commission. We share a collective passion for developing products that are uniquely appropriate for African conditions. The company acquired technology to produce a capillary ultrafiltration membrane and through the DTI, a pilot plant was commissioned in our factory in Somerset West to pioneer this process. This factory was the first in South Africa.  The latest addition to the group, Ikusasa International, was formed in 2015.

Lastly, I am also Chairman of Hadithi Holdings, which is a sports development company aimed at nurturing talent.  I have some amazing partners in Siyabulela Dandala, African sports legends (Sibusiso Zuma, Benjani Mwaruwari , Thabo September, and Eric Carlos Mtshamba who heads up our Soccer Academy based at Dale College).

Having been brought up by a single mom, who did not have a decent paying job, who really struggled to raise my three sisters and I, I cannot imagine what my future would have been had I not been blessed with a bursary and an opportunity to study at Bishops.  To this day, I am eternally grateful to those who saw fit to involve themselves in improving the lives of black disadvantaged children at a time when it was not fashionable to do so.

As I always mention in speeches at school farewells, “only through real commitment in advancing, developing and nurturing the youth, especially those who cannot afford to pursue their dreams and hone their skills, will we be able to make a meaningful contribution to the future of our beloved country.  Pro fide et Patria.
